To understand WWII and the roles of doctors in Nazi period. And review the history and see through the importance and influence of a doctor.

Communicative approach and traditional method to analyze the text

I. Lead in activities (10 min.)

How much do you know about WWII? Have you learned something about what Hilter forced Nazi doctors to do?

II. Background knowledge (10 min.)

WWII is impressive and Hilter is notorious in history. Many decent doctor in Nazi period are forced to do something evil to hurt people and even kill people like animals.

III.  Analysis of the text (60 min.)

1. Some relevant information on Nazi doctors.

2. Language points: words and expressions.

3. Analysis of difficult sentences.

4. Review what has happened in the history and remind medical students to make use of knowledge to serve human beings rather than do something evil.

I Background Information

阿道夫·希特勒(Adolf Hitler,1889年4月20日—1945年4月30日),是德國國家社會主義工人黨,即納粹黨的黨魁和納粹德國的元首。第二次世界大戰(zhàn)時期兼任德國武裝力量三軍統(tǒng)帥。希特勒嚴格地說應(yīng)該是奧地利人。

早年歲月

生於巴伐利亞和奧地利的邊界城市因河畔布勞瑙的一個海關(guān)文職人員家庭,父親阿伯雷·希特勒曾經(jīng)當過鞋匠,後來才轉(zhuǎn)為海關(guān)文職人員。童年時代性格倔犟、放任。早年學(xué)習(xí)繪畫。中學(xué)時成績非常差,因此未畢業(yè)就退學(xué)了。十八歲時報考維也納美術(shù)學(xué)院卻未被錄取。父母雙亡之後生活窘迫,流浪到維也納街頭行乞,靠賣畫為生,有時被雇傭來掃雪、扛行李。希特勒早在中學(xué)時就接觸了狂熱的民族主義,來到維也納之後又閱讀了大量吹噓種族優(yōu)越的書籍,更加癡迷於其中,發(fā)誓要為"德國復(fù)興而奮斗"。

邁向權(quán)力之顛

第一次世界大戰(zhàn)剛爆發(fā)時他志愿參加了德國巴伐利亞州的軍隊,在西缐與英法聯(lián)軍作戰(zhàn),1917年由傳令兵晉升為下士班長。戰(zhàn)後,由於德國曾爆發(fā)以猶太人為首,與蘇俄第三國際聯(lián)手的共產(chǎn)革命,德國陸軍一方面要避免共產(chǎn)思想在軍隊中蔓延,一方面又對如雨後春筍成立的各種新政黨有興趣,於是成立了一個調(diào)查局。希特勒因為這個調(diào)查局符合他的反共理念而應(yīng)征并獲得錄用。在慕尼黑大學(xué)的受訓(xùn)課程與向被遣返戰(zhàn)俘的演說中,希特勒的演說才能讓教授與戰(zhàn)俘們同樣印象深刻,1919年在執(zhí)行任務(wù)旁聽德國工人黨(即後來的納粹黨)會議時,希特勒起身痛斥一個鼓吹巴伐利亞分離運動者是中了猶太人要把德國分裂成兩個國家的奸計,德國工人黨主席德萊克斯勒對此演說印象深刻并邀請了希特勒入黨。不久後希特勒成為主席團委員,3年後出任黨魁,正式將黨名更名為國家社會主義德國工人黨(Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei,Nazi)并雇傭了一批打手成立了國民沖鋒隊。1923年因為啤酒館暴動入獄,併在獄中寫下《我的奮斗》一書,表達出他多方面的觀點,如兼併奧地利,反猶和獨裁。1924年12月出獄,次年重建納粹黨併成立黨衛(wèi)軍(警衛(wèi)旗隊)。

第三帝國1933年1月30日出任德國總理,通過「國會縱火案」與「長刀之夜」打擊異己黨派與黨內(nèi)反對派。1934年8月2日,87歲高齡的德國總統(tǒng)興登堡病逝,希特勒兼任德國總統(tǒng),并將總統(tǒng)與總理兩個職務(wù)合二為一,擁有無上的權(quán)力,可以無限期連任,并命令所有軍隊以及法官和政府官員向他宣誓效忠。作為元首和總理,他成為國家政權(quán)的單獨執(zhí)掌者即獨裁者,把軍隊和教會之外的所有政治社會機構(gòu)都一體化。他執(zhí)政期間的德國被稱為納粹德國或德意志第三帝國。并且取締其他一切政黨和團體,宣佈納粹黨和第三帝國合一。

在第三帝國初期階段,他的某些經(jīng)濟措施一度使得德國經(jīng)濟走出第一次世界大戰(zhàn)後的泥潭,也因此獲得下層民眾的支持。希特勒承諾「讓德國每一戶人家的餐桌上有牛排與面包」,而且他的承諾在第三帝國初期(1933-1938)變成了現(xiàn)實,從而使更多人擁護希特勒。所以戰(zhàn)後有人這樣評價他:「元首(希特勒)在1938年之前是偉人,1938-1940年之間是暴君,1940之後則是個徹底的瘋子!惯@句話不無道理。

第二次世界大戰(zhàn)

不過在政治體制上,希特勒領(lǐng)導(dǎo)下的德國相對魏瑪共和國時期是傾向於極端民族保守主義的。1936年,他和墨索里尼領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的意大利、東條英機領(lǐng)導(dǎo)的日本聯(lián)盟結(jié)成軸心國,這直接導(dǎo)致第二次世界大戰(zhàn)。德國軍隊在他的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)下干涉西班牙內(nèi)戰(zhàn),扶持fo郎哥政權(quán),并吞併奧地利、捷克斯洛伐克,入侵波蘭、法國、蘇聯(lián)等國家,發(fā)動了對英國的大規(guī)?找u,但英美空軍回以更大規(guī)模的報復(fù)。

在戰(zhàn)爭方面,希特勒在軍事上摒棄了第一次世界大戰(zhàn)的戰(zhàn)爭模式,創(chuàng)立了并且實踐了閃電戰(zhàn)、空軍支援等新型戰(zhàn)爭模式,改變了戰(zhàn)爭的形態(tài)。

1945年4月28日,蘇聯(lián)紅軍攻入柏林市區(qū)。希特勒宣佈鄧尼茨海軍元帥為元首繼承人,宣傳部長戈培爾博士為總理繼承人,黨務(wù)部長鮑曼為黨務(wù)繼承人,并下令逮捕不忠的帝國元帥戈林和蓋世太保首領(lǐng)希姆萊,之前他還槍斃了企圖叛逃的衛(wèi)隊長,愛娃·布勞恩的親戚菲格萊因。30日15時30分,希特勒與愛娃·布勞恩舉行婚禮,之後希特勒用一支7.62毫米手槍自殺,而愛娃·布勞恩則服氰化鉀自盡。1945年5月8日夜,納粹德國正式投降。德國戰(zhàn)敗。不久盟軍在總理府的廢墟中找到了希特勒尚未完全焚毀的尸體。

1. This is one of those stories that invite fear.

2. Now we know. During the period of the past centurythat I call Night, medicine was practiced in certain places not toheal but to harm, not to fight off death but to serve it.

The eminent Nazi doctorresponsible for "ethical" questions, Rudolf Ramm, did nothesitate to declare that "only an honest and moral person maybecome a good doctor."

6. In Ravensbrück, Dachau,Buchenwald, and Auschwitz, German scientistsoperated on their victims without anesthesia in an effort todiscover cures for obscure diseases. The researchers let them die ofhunger, thirst, cold; they drowned them, amputated their limbs,suffocated them, dissected their still-living bodies to study theirbehavior and measure their stamina.

7. And I recall his fateful gesture thatseparated the living from the soon-to-be dead. I learned his nameonly later. Morbid rumors went around about him.
